Here's How Sedentary Lifestyle is Destroying Your Health and What to Do Instead

In a world where sedentary lifestyles have become the norm, it's easy to forget that our bodies were designed to move. No matter how you might feel, it’s really important to recognise that there’s a basic level of activity or steps needed for your body to work well. The harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle are real, and the results can be quite serious. Let’s look at the main risks.

1. Increased Chance of Chronic Diseases

There's been quite a bit of research out there that highlights how individuals who don’t get enough physical activity tend to face a greater chance of developing serious health issues. We're talking about common chronic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and even heart disease. Here’s the kicker—being inactive doesn’t just mess with your body. It can really affect your mood & mental health too.

2. Negative Impact on Mental Health

Sedentary behavior has been linked to increased levels of anxiety, stress, and even depression. This is because physical activity releases endorphins, the "happy hormones," which can help alleviate anxiety, reduce stress, and improve self-esteem. In fact, exercise has been shown to be just as effective as medication in treating mild to moderate depression. It’s like, when you don’t move around much, your mind can feel the strain just as much as your body does. So, it’s pretty clear now that staying active is crucial, not just for looking toned or athletic, but for your overall mental state as well.

3. Decline in Mobility and Flexibility

As we get older (yes, we all do, you too), maintaining mobility and flexibility becomes increasingly important. Sitting around for too long can lead to the loss of muscle mass and bone density, making it more challenging to perform daily tasks and increasing the risk of falls. Being able to tie your own shoe or lift this 4 pint bottle of milk all by yourself when you turn 70 is a flex and something to brag about. So, keeping active is not just a good idea; it’s rather necessary as we age.

Say No to Sedentary Lifestyle - Do This Instead

If you want to keep your quality of life intact or even better than what you’ve got now in the golden years, don’t wait any longer. TODAY is the best day to incorporate walking or cycling into your daily routine, schedule a dance break between the meetings or hit the studio for your favourite class – Zumba, Pilates, Body Pump, ballet, tap dancing, stretching, HIIT or swimming. If that’s too much, start small – even wiggling your toes when you’re watching your favourite series is a good start.

Oh, and don’t forget to pick an activity you enjoy or at least are ready to give a go without hard feelings. Notice how you feel during the exercise and how you feel after – happier, stronger, energised, relaxed, calm – and let it be your fuel to do it again.
